The Etiquette of Save The Date

One if by land, and two if by sea;"

Longfellow's "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" memorialized the Massachusetts Revolutionary War early warning system.  Although you may not require a young silversmith riding on horseback  through your neighborhood streets shouting, "The wedding is coming!", you may want to give advance notice to your potential wedding guests.  Just as you are planning every detail of your wedding day, your guests may need to make special travel plans or alter vacations, or business trips in order to attend your wedding.

That's where the Save The Date card or magnet literally saves the day!  Like Paul Revere, the Save the Date card or magnet provides advance notice of your upcoming wedding.  Even better, it tells your prospective guests when your upcoming wedding will take place and with whom.  Save The Date etiquette allows you to send your save the date up to one year in advance of your wedding date.  This is plenty of time for your potential guests to make arrangements to be there on your special day.

 A Save the Date does not take the place of formal wedding invitation.  Typically, the final line of a save the date is "Invitation to follow".  Therefore, you should carefully consider your guest list.  Specifically, you should thin your guest list prior to sending your save the date card or magnet.  Save The Date Etiquette provides that every save the date recipient should also receive a formal wedding invitation six to eight weeks before your wedding.

In our house, save the dates make their home on the refrigerator door. There is no better way to keep your wedding date front and center in your guests minds.  They are less likely to make plans that will conflict with your wedding date. Your save the date is a daily reminder that is easily accessible to your guests. 

In short, your wedding date is one that you will never forget.  It is a day filled with promises, elegance, ceremony,  and celebration.  You will want to share your special day with your family and friends.  Save the Dates provide that extra insurance that your invited guests will attend.  For convenience, we list the Save the Date Etiquette below.

Save The Date Etiquette

• Save the Date cards and magnets can be given out up to one year, or more, in advance of your wedding.

•  Make sure that your guest list does not need any thinning as every guest that receives a Save the Date should receive an invitation and vice versa.

•  Keep the wording simple.

• All you really need are your names, wedding date and, if desired, the location.

• Typically, Save the Date cards end with the phrase, "Invitation to follow"

• Your guests will expect a formal wedding invitation approximately six to eight weeks prior to your actual wedding day.
